Lefka Ori - The White Mountains - May 10th 2010

Crete in May is a wonderful time, the weather is stunning and the contrast of the white mountains against the backdrop of a blue sky simply magnificent. Not in May 2010 however, it would seem that one of the mildest winters in Crete for 25 or so years has left the snowy white mountains erm.......not so white.
Having said that the scenery of Crete and the mountains without snow were still a sight to behold. The area of Western Crete was once again my most favourite place to visit especially between the unspoilt Chania to Kolimbari regions where the people, scenery, history and choice of Taverna's is amazing. The magnificent Lake Kournas with its spectacular location and water activities once again made me determined to return again this summer.
My advice to anyone wishing to travel to Crete would be to visit the Western areas of the island and live in a real Cretan village and take in the atmosphere of the local community.
If the winter is anything to go by, the summer in Crete is going to be very hot indeed. Maybe next year in May whilst on my travels, I will see some snow on the mountains.
